Student’s art to come to life at town centre

POSTED August 28, 2018

Students from St Mary’s College Ipswich have been given the opportunity to see first-hand how their artwork has been transformed into a silhouette before the life-size steel artworks go on display at Ripley Town Centre.

Ten students were accompanied by Principal Judith Finan to ColourChiefs creative workshop in Brisbane to experience the conversion.

ColourChief director Angus Ross said it was a unique way for the students to experience a form of graphic art design.

“The students were shown how their photos had been converted to silhouettes and the artistic license it takes to make them look natural in Photoshop as a silhouette formation,” said Mr Ross.

“The images were then cut out of black acrylic at 10 per cent of final size as a take home piece, this was definitely a highlight for the students.”

St Mary’s College Ipswich Principal Judith Finan said the students found this experience informative and rewarding.

“We are all very thankful to Sekisui House and ColourChiefs for coordinating a memorable tour of the impressive workshop,” she said.

Ripley Town Centre development manager Taku Hashimoto said the ColourChiefs tour was an exciting way for students to be more involved in the artwork process.

“So many schools were involved in this community initiative, and it was great to give students from St Mary’s the opportunity to be a part of the behind the scenes process,” Mr Hashimoto said.

“The ColourChiefs tour gave students a real-life experience into what goes on in a creative digital workshop. It was a fantastic day for all involved and we look forward to unveiling the final product over the next month.”

Mr Hashimoto said the artwork had been designed to pay tribute to the energy of youth and to become an enduring symbol of the Ripley region as it continues to come of age.

The public artwork will feature up to five silhouettes and will be unveiled to the public at the official opening of stage one of Ripley Town Centre on May 26.
